Erika Powell, Ed.D., is a Special Education Instructional Coach for the Christina School District. She is married to a fellow special educator and has two sons with disabilities. She received her undergraduate degree in History and Political Science from the University of Delaware and her master’s and doctoral degrees in Education from Wilmington University. Dr. Powell began her education career as a special education teacher at New Castle County Detention Center. She then taught at the Ferris School and assisted in piloting the first distance learning program at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center. She returned to public school to gain experience while working on her doctorate in Educational Leadership. During her time as a classroom teacher, she taught grades 7-12 and also took on additional roles as a building mentor and a district lead mentor in multiple districts. During this phase of her career, Dr. Powell authored English and Social Studies curricula at the middle and high school levels. After leaving the classroom, she served as Special Education Coordinator in the Colonial School District before taking on her current role. Dr. Powell has been a graduate adjunct professor for Delaware State University and taught dual enrollment through Wilmington University. For the past two decades, she has served as an advocate for individuals with disabilities as well as for special educators. Dr. Powell joined the GACEC in 2020 and serves in the role of parent of children with disabilities. She also currently is the Chairperson of the Policy and Law Committee.
